French bread fresh from the vend!

A baker in France has come up with the ingenious idea that he can stock a vending machine with par-baked bread, which once selected is baked in an in-machine oven and delivered to the customer. Featuring a touch pad front plate, the machine promises to at least attempt to stave off France’s hunger pangs for bread in the middle of the night when traditional bakeries are close in a very simple way.

Due to french law, which says you cannot put preservatives into the nations favourite food, french baker Jean-Louis Hecht realised he could stock part baked bread – which stays fresh for up to 3 days – ready to be cooked when customers ordered it from the machine, allowing for fresh bread to be available 24 hours a day.

Hecht is planning on rolling these machines out across France, not to rival traditional bakeries but to compliment them, as he says “bakeries will have to adapt or die” in the current economic climate.

Luxe Vending in Mumbai:

Just recently launched in Mumbai, are vending machines which vend not only gold and silver, which is sporadically available elsewhere, but also precious jewels and diamonds! This vending machine has been launched with the idea to make jewels accessible to all, but also due to Indians “unquenchable appetite for jewels and precious metals”.

The first machine has now been launched in the exclusive Phoenix Mills shopping mall located in central Mumbai, with a range of 36 different products, and a price range of between 1,000 rupees (about £12.60) to 30,000 rupees, allowing the machine to cater to most pockets of customers in the mall.

The Gitanjali Group, the company responsible for this machine have said they have hopes to expand into at least 75 locations, including more shopping centres, airports and Hindu temples around India. While the Gitanjali group claim there will be no real security problems with the vending machines as they are incredibly robust, and placed in secure locations, men in the local area are seeing a very different problem with the machines. Jammy Gagrat, a local businessman expressed his concern; “this machine is going to be a problem for the gents! Ladies are going to keep on buying more and more every time they come here!”

Eco Vending on a Roll

Ever thought about throwing your work down the toilet? Well now you can, and save the planet at the same time!

As you may already know, the Japanese are infamous for their strange and unusual vending machines, but this may raise the bar to new levels.

A new type of vending machine was unveiled a number of weeks ago at Tokyo’s Eco Products trade fair which feeds on waste office paper and outputs rolls of toilet paper! It is said that 40 sheets of A4 office paper is the amount required for a roll, and takes around 30 minutes from beginning to end (this process comprises of: shredding, mixing with water, pulping, flattening, drying and rolling).

Contrary to many gadgets born in Japan, this machine is far from compact – standing proud at 6ft tall and weighing just under 600 Kg – so don’t expect to tuck it away nicely in the corner of the bathroom!

Apparently, the White Goat, as the machine is named, costs about 6 pence to create a roll. Comparing this with the typical 40p per roll for a premium brand, it seems a substantial saving; but unfortunately the quality leaves a little to be desired when compared to its luxury brothers.

However, the factor most likely to hinder wide-spread adoption of this machine is probably its price. At a whopping $100,000 (around the £65,000 mark), toilet paper would need to be in extremely high demand in the office for this expense to be a viable purchase and realise any savings.

Firstly, it is important to detach yourself from any personal preference towards particular products. This is perhaps an obvious statement, but achieving it is not always so simple.
